Situation

As part of a week-long executive development course at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, this company's senior managers learned first hand how a company and the media interact during a crisis situation.

Process

A four-hour crisis management training exercise was scripted that required the managers to respond to unfolding “events” at a hypothetical manufacturing facility. The exercise culminated in an attack interview by a “TV reporter” captured on videotape for later review and discussion.

Result

The training program consistently received high marks in post-workshop evaluations, with leaders saying they felt better prepared to handle the media aspects of an emergency should one occur on their watch.
